Morning all,
Yesterday was one of those breezy, sunny, autumnal days where the white clouds race each other across the blue sky.
I decided it was a good day to go for an underwater swim and explore what was going on in the river. Well, to begin with there wasn’t much of interest and then then I spied Herring Gull Harry busy fishing on the river bank – nothing interesting in that – but then I saw that he had put his worm sandwich next to him on a lily leaf.
Oh froglettes, the opportunity was too good to miss. I swam underwater up to where the the stalk of the lily leaf was and managed with a few gentle tugs to break the stem and then gently swam underwater with the sandwich balancing on the lily leaf taking care not to get caught up in any river currents and lose his sandwich. I swam as far as the bend in the river and then I hid the lily leaf out of sight amongst the reeds.
Meanwhile, Herring Gull Harry carried on fishing – and fishing – and fishing. After what seemed like an age, he finally caught a fish which he reeled in and put it in his bucket. He then turned to get his sandwich only to find it wasn’t there. He looked at the spot where the sandwich had been with a very puzzled expression on his face and then he looked around the river and the river bank. He scratched his head and then turned his bag upside down. He shrugged his shoulders. Still no sign of his sandwich. Poor Herring Gull Harry. He sat down on the river bank to figure out how a sandwich could vanish into thin air! I found it all very, very amusing.
He then got up and I guess hopped off to get another sandwich for himself. I decided to return his sandwich to him and all was going to plan until an eel appeared out of nowhere and spooked me with his speed. Unfortunately, the lily leaf wobbled and Herring Gull Harry’s sandwich fell into the river. I scooped it up and put it back on the lily leaf and then put the lily leaf back where it was just as Herring Gull Harry appeared on the river bank with another sandwich in his hands.
Imagine his surprise when he saw his (slightly soggy) sandwich had been on the lily leaf all along. Poor frog looked completely mystified. After all, how could a worm sandwich disappear and then re-appear when there is no one around?
It was all I could do, froglettes, to keep a straight face as I swam away without betraying myself to Herring Gull Harry.
Bye,
E
