Some Background Information on Errol
I have called this blog “Errol’s Scribbles” as these are some short stories that I have written about everyday life for Errol and his best friend, Herring Gull Harry, as an introduction to these two characters. These stories are aimed at 5-8 year olds and some of you will already be familiar with Errol as your advice and comments have been a big help as I have developed the characters and the stories thus far. However, as I publish some of these stories over the next few weeks, all comments and feedback will be gratefully received.
Now, Errol. He is an adventurous frog, full of life and as mad as a box of frogs! He is inquisitive, cheeky and loyal to his friends. He likes eating worm sandwiches, moth burgers and grasshopper cookies and drinks pumpkin juice. His favourite hobbies are fishing and holding Raindrop Racing competitions (of which he is the undisputed champion, of course).
Errol lives in the town of Marblefish. He has lots of adventures: whether it is helping to catch the thieves of a run-away combine harvester, finding hidden treasure or hunting for ghosts with his best friend, Herring Gull Harry.
Now, all that is left for you to do is to read the first of Errol’s many adventures, simply called “An Easter Nightmare”.
Enjoy……
An Easter Nightmare
Morning froglettes,
Oh, what a nightmare I had last night – you would not believe it, froglettes, and it all began last Saturday when I’d invited my friend, Herring Gull Harry, and Uncle Wilf to lunch on Easter Sunday.
I bought some chocolate worms at the harbour market. They were fat, wriggly looking, worms with a pattern on them and different coloured smarties for eyes. I carried them home and put them in a china dish on my kitchen table so that we could munch on them after our lunch.
Harmless? Well, so far, froglettes, and then the oddest thing happened. I was looking at the chocolate worms in the dish and then one of them seemed to wriggle and then it stopped. I stared at it, blinked and just as I was starting to think that I had imagined it, another of the worms wriggled, moved and then stopped. Well, I had to pinch myself to make sure that I was not seeing things but no, one of the worms then had the cheek to wink AND smile at me.
Well, by this point I was getting very puzzled as to what was going on with those worms so I sat down on one of the chairs and watched them. For a while nothing happened and then, one of the chocolate worms who was looking right at me wriggled a couple of times and then it moved towards me. Well, I could not believe my eyes. Then, another of the worms winked at me and started to move towards me and then another one and soon the rest of the chocolate worms in the china bowl were wriggling their way out of the bowl and over my kitchen table. I watched them and then, I swear it was not my imagination but they seemed to be heading towards me. I honestly thought I was going mad!
As the first of the chocolate worms reached me I stood and moved backwards towards the kitchen door only to find that the door opened on its own and … in came more chocolate worms. I looked around and noticed that none of them were smiling at me. Two of them winked at me the rest of them just carried on moving silently towards me. I bent down and tried to pick one up but the chocolate worm seemed to evade my right hand and carried on wriggling towards my right foot. Then the thought occurred to me, that an army of chocolate worms were going to eat me for their lunch.
I panicked and decided to make a dash for it through my sitting room to the front door but the faster I went, the faster the worms chased me. I am not afraid to admit that by the time I reached the front door I was hopping as quickly as I could to get away from those chocolate worms. The more I looked at them, the more there were and the more menacing they seemed to get.
Then I heard the shrill ring of the door bell. Relief, I thought, Herring Gull Harry and Uncle Wilf had come to rescue me. I opened the front door, looked out and …. realised my alarm clock was ringing away.
